Do I really mean this?

Psalm 73:25-26
25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Have you ever found yourself singing a song in worship and wondering if you really mean what you’re saying? It may not happen much when it’s a declarative statement about God. But what about lyrics like: “Lord, I need you, Oh, I need You” Or “Your Grace is Enough” Or “When I'm lost in the madness, You're the peace that calms my soul, Our eyes are on You”? It’s not that these things aren’t true, but it’s a different type of lyric. It’s expressing worship that accurately reflects God and what He’s capable of, but it may not actually represent how we feel at that moment. “Lord, I need you?” Do I? I know I should, but do I live that way? “Your Grace is Enough!” Once again, true… but why do I feel like I never have enough? “When I’m lost, You’re my peace, my eyes are on You…” Hmm…. my eyes are on you sometimes… Here’s what’s awesome about distinctly Christian worship: it is completely dependent on God. The beauty of the Gospel is that Jesus does for us what we could never do for ourselves. Sometimes you’ll mean what you’re singing in church. And sometimes you may not. It’s OK. What’s incredible about our God is that He’s patient with us, He transforms us, and He really is our portion forever. So during this Lenten season, why not return to Psalm 73 over and over again? Let’s start with truth, and let our emotions catch up. There are times when I desire things on earth above the Lord, but in that failure, God is my strength and my portion.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your patience with me. I adore You for all of who You are. You are infinitely worthy of all praise. We bless your name in this moment, and ask that you would mold hearts and minds so that we might be able to join in with the psalmist and declare, “There is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.” Thank you, Eternal King, for reigning on high, and sustaining me minute by minute, second, by second. I love you. Amen.
